Pump & Valve Packing Selection Checklist

Identify the equipment movement before choosing a packing material. Pump shafts, reciprocating equipment and valve stems have different duties; fiber, impregnation, reinforcement and section size must be matched to the actual stuffing box.

Start with the equipment

State whether the packing seals a rotating shaft, reciprocating rod or valve stem. Record shaft or stem diameter, stuffing-box dimensions and the current packing section. Add the equipment model or manufacturer requirement when available.

Equipment detail Why it belongs on the RFQ
Movement and speed Distinguishes dynamic and static packing duty.
Section size Defines stuffing-box fit.
Shaft/stem condition Affects the contact-surface assessment.
Fluid and solids Informs material and abrasion review.
Flush/lubrication arrangement Defines the actual installation environment.

Identify the braid and treatment

Graphite packing, graphite PTFE packing and pure PTFE packing describe different constructions. Aramid corners, a resilient core and metallic reinforcement also change the purchase description. Retain these details rather than shortening the item to a generic packing name.

The graphite packing page separates plain braid from reinforced options. The graphite PTFE page identifies mixed constructions and corner-reinforced choices.

Keep pressure and speed conditions separate

A static gland pressure value is not a rotating-shaft pressure rating. Likewise, a maximum speed is not evidence that the packing can run at that speed under every pressure and fluid condition. Use the selected product data for the actual equipment duty.

Record normal and design conditions, fluid temperature and any relevant solids or cleaning cycle. If the existing packing failed, describe the observed condition without assuming the replacement material is the only variable.

Choose a practical supply form

Packing can be ordered by spool, length, cut ring or formed set where available. A formed set requires the ring ID, OD, height and set arrangement. A spool order needs section size and the required length or weight.

Use die-formed graphite ring information for a specified set rather than quoting a spool of graphite braid as an equivalent.

Prepare installation and acceptance requirements

Request the grade-specific installation information and any equipment-approved ring arrangement. Ring cutting, joint orientation and gland adjustment follow the actual procedure, not a universal tightening number. Identify material, dimensions and any required records before supply.

For a broader purchase list, the RFQ checklist helps keep each packing size and quantity separate.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same packing be used in a pump and valve?

Only when the selected grade is suitable for both specified duties. Identify movement, speed and operating conditions; the equipment requirements remain separate.

Are graphite packing and graphite PTFE packing the same?

No. They use different material constructions. Reinforcement, impregnation and corner fibers should also remain in the item description.

What dimensions are needed for preformed rings?

Supply ring inside diameter, outside diameter, height and the required set arrangement. Include the stuffing-box drawing if available.
